I don’t know Mr. Fichtner, I think he is a PMI/PMP blogger, but I like his quote a lot.
Project management is mostly about people management, and maybe even more about team selection.
I don’t know how many people I have trained in project management over the last 30 years, 1000s, or the number of organizations and companies i have worked at around the world.
But I do know this, every group I have worked with over the years, I have at some point always asked this simple question, “We all have worked on great projects at times, you know, projects that just flowed, where we solved problems, we got the job done, it was challenging but also fun, etc., – for you, what has made for a great project?”
The most common answer, across all industries and around the world, has always been “the people you are working with.”
Makes me wonder if we might have project management process a little wrong. Maybe, we should always start, from the very beginning, not with the objectives, the budget, the charter, maybe we should always start with the team – and never move forward without the right team.
